He brought the scattered Anyanya fighters under one command in 1971, then negotiated the agreement that ended seventeen years of war and won the south its autonomy.
Joseph Lagu united the southern Sudanese rebels in 1971, bringing the fighting units of the Anyanya and its political wing, the Southern Sudan Liberation Movement, under a single authority.
Representing the SSLM, he negotiated the Addis Ababa Agreement of February 1972, which ended the seventeen-year conflict and granted the southern region autonomy. He served as President of the High Executive Council of Southern Sudan from 1978 to 1979.
